An Overview

The moving and storage industry is regulated by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC). The PUC defines local moving as a move of less than 100 miles. Moves over 100 miles are considered long distance moves. Local moves are charged on a by the hour basis. While long distance moves are charged based on the weight of the shipment and the distance traveled.
Local Moves are charged on a straight time basis for loading and unloading the truck. Once the truck is loaded double drive time is charged for travel between the origin (the loading site) and the destination ( the unloading site). Charges are rounded to the closest 1/4 hour and are COD. Holguin Moving also offers packing and unpacking services. These services, whether the move is local or long distance, are charged on a time, materials used basis.

The Right Crew Size Saves Money

Rates for local moves are calculated based on how many trucks and men are used. The important thing here is to have the right size crew for your job requirements. Fewer men may have a lower hourly rate but will take more hours to move the shipment. This may cause overtime charges if the move takes more than 8 hours. More men, while costing more per hour, may actually be more efficient and save you money. This is especially true if there is furniture that needs to be disassembled and assembled, heavy pieces like pianos or big screen TVs, or stairs at the origin or destination.
How many trucks? In most cases one truck is adequate for the move. Holguin Moving has trucks ranging from 12 foot bobtails to 42 foot tractor trailers to accommodate any size move. There are time however when more than one truck is needed. This is true for large shipments, split deliveries, pickups, and access problems such as steep driveways, low overhangs, and narrow streets which may require smaller trucks be used. While multiple trucks will raise the hourly rate the overall cost of the move will be cheaper than if the wrong truck is used and there needs to be multiple trips, or a long carry because the truck can't get close to the residence.

Organization - A little preparation will save big dollars

The old saying goes: "Time is money". This is especially true in the moving industry where rates are charge by the hour. Proper packing and organization prior to the move will save dollars on move day. A good rule of thumb is that anything that can go in a box should be packed. This includes pictures, lamps, lamp shades, small toys and breakables.

Boxes should be packed tightly, but not so that they bulge. All boxes must be closed and taped. Time will be lost and your cost will go up if the mover must repack improperly packed boxes, or can't pack the truck tightly due to topless boxes. Please refer to our packing guide for helpful tips on proper packing. If you have further questions please feel free to call Holguin Moving where a moving consultants will be glad to walk you through the packing process.

The Holguin Moving Crew

Organization includes deciding in advance which items will be moved and which will not. It is best to separate the items not going as much as possible to avoid confusion and delays. Remember to get all items down from the attic or crawl spaces before move day. If only large items are going, be sure to clear off and around these items. A clear a path will make the furniture easily accessible for the mover. Remember, "time is money" and stepping over things and waiting for items to be cleared slows everything down and costs you money. Holding a garage sale may be a good way to clear unwanted items. Holguin Moving has a Garage Sale Guide that will help with this process.

Estimating Move Costs

The cost of your move can be either quoted by a Holguin Moving representative over the phone or with a no cost moving consultation at your home.

Phone estimates

Phone estimates are non-binding approximations of your moving costs. When calling you will be asked to describe the type of home you are moving from and to (house, apartment, townhouse, etc.), how many rooms are being moved, any large pieces, and any access problems. Before calling survey your home writing down any large or difficult pieces that may take extra time or special handling. Next go outside at your current home and at your new home. Look steep driveways, stairs, low overhangs and any other access problems which may require additional time or a special vehicle. With this information a Holguin Moving representative will be able to estimate the number of men, vehicles and hours needed to move your residence. Remember this is a ball park figure. Holguin Moving has set minimums based on the community you live in. After the minimum is met you will be charged to the closest quarter hour to reflect actual time used.

No Cost, In-Home Moving Consultations

A no cost, in-home moving consultation is the most accurate way to determine your moving costs. During this visual survey, a Holguin Moving representative (estimator) will come to your home and list all items you are planning to move on a table of measurements. Using this table, the estimator will be able to determine the weight of your shipment. Based on that weight the estimator will be able to determine how long your move will take and the cost of your move. It is important that the estimator get an accurate idea what you are moving so make sure to show the estimator everything you plan on having moved also describe any special circumstances (additional pick-ups or deliveries) or access problems (stairs, narrow roads, steep driveways) that may apply to your move.

The estimate will take approximately one hour to complete. During the estimate you will be given additional information about our company, guides to help you prepare for your move, and have a chance to ask any questions you may have about your move. Please ask questions. We understand that moving can be a stressful experience. Please let us relieve some of this stress by answering any and all questions you have.
